District of Invermere Succeeds in Deer Cull Petition

On October 25, 2013, the B.C. Supreme Court dismissed the Petition of the Invermere Deer Protection Society who were seeking to invalidate decisions taken by the District of Invermere to deal with its urban deer problem. At this time, the Reasons for Judgment are oral but written reasons will be released soon. The Court found that the District was within its statutory jurisdiction to seek a deer cull; was procedurally fair in its public process and was found to be reasonable in adopting its Deer Committee’s recommendations. Several B.C. local governments have been awaiting this decision before implementing local solutions to their own urban deer issues.
