Government Extends Protection under the Human Rights Code to Transgendered Persons
On Monday, July 25, the Legislature gave Bill 27 – 2016 Human Rights Code Amendment Act, 2016 three readings. The Bill amends the Human Rights Code to include “gender identity or expression” as a prohibited ground of discrimination under sections 7 to 11, 13 and 14 of the Code. Local governments should note that the amendment will prohibit discrimination against transgendered persons in employment and in the provision of an accommodation, service or facility. The amendment will be in force upon receiving Royal Assent.
