Enforcing Bylaws: What You Need To Know

Local governments routinely deal with individuals and businesses that do not comply with their bylaws. Sometimes, local governments receive complaints from citizens about bylaw infractions that affect them as well. These situations can be challenging to navigate; however, local governments are afforded with various tools and strategies to address non-compliance of their bylaws. In this paper, we provide an overview of different approaches and strategies local governments can utilize to deal with these kinds of situations. These include investigations, tickets, formal demands, enforcement by the courts, and contempt. While this is not meant to be an exhaustive list of available steps for the enforcement of bylaws, it serves to provide an overview of what can be available to local governments generally.
