Codes of Conduct and More: Elected Officials Behaving Badly
Most professionals are held accountable for their conduct through legislative mechanisms. Lawyers must comply with a Code of Professional Conduct passed by the Law Society under the Legal Profession Act. Doctors, nurses, dentists, and many other health professionals are governed by self-regulated colleges under the Health Professions Act. Similar self-regulation also exists for architects, agrologists, acupuncturists, automotive refinishing technicians, applied science technologists….and the list goes on. Under these schemes, conduct that falls below the expected standard can be punished by a variety of disciplinary sanctions, ranging from a simple warning letter to suspension or expulsion from the profession.
